How can I decorate my kitchen farmhouse style?

The farmhouse kitchen is often considered to be a space for getting together. It’s where loved ones gather to socialize. Having a farmhouse kitchen means having space for everyone’s seat, when you’re hosting a family gathering. Farmhouse kitchens are full of life but shouldn’t feel overly cluttered.

If your kitchen includes a dining space, the focal point of the room should be a sturdy farmhouse dining table. Add color and personality with a table runner, which you might like to change with the season. A new table runner brings new life to the room. Changing the accessories around your room can make it look completely different.

Is the farmhouse look going out of style?

The great thing about the farmhouse look is that it’s so beautifully timeless. The rustic aesthetic will always seem homely and welcoming, whilst the use of solid wood means that farmhouse furniture will stand the test of time for generations.

Your own farmhouse kitchen might remind you of baking with Grandma, or of preparing family meals when you were young. This is because the farmhouse look is so long-lasting and enduring, as wonderful and cozy today as it always has been.

What is the difference between rustic and farmhouse décor?

Farmhouse décor can be described as rustic, but ‘rustic’ doesn’t always mean ‘farmhouse’. A rustic look includes natural wood, complete with its natural variations and slight imperfections. Rustic aesthetics are warm and homely, but the farmhouse look is very specific.

The farmhouse aesthetic includes dashes of color that bring everything together. There’s a more organized overall look. A farmhouse kitchen looks well thought out, like the nurturing person in your family has spent a lot of time making everything perfect. Everything should have a place and a purpose, if you want a farmhouse kitchen.

A more general rustic room might look less put-together. It could be rougher around the edges, with fewer bursts of color to accessorize. Where in a farmhouse kitchen you might paint a lot of wood, in a more general rustic kitchen everything’s more natural overall, and copper often plays a big part.

Is the modern farmhouse trend dead?

The great thing about the farmhouse look is that it’s so beautifully timeless. The rustic and homely aesthetic will always seem welcoming and comforting. Of course, whilst Grandma’s kitchen is a place of fond memories you don’t want to completely recreate it. The modern farmhouse trend has included adaptations that mean it’s certainly not dead – in fact, it can simply keep changing and adjusting for further generations to come!

What does a modern farmhouse kitchen look like?

The farmhouse aesthetic stands the test of time and is a classic look that’s based on generations of charm. However, changes over time have brought the farmhouse kitchen into the 21st century.

Now, instead of being places of clutter and feeling very lived-in, farmhouse kitchens often have more organized and well-managed storage. It’s a change that makes them seem more spacious. They’re still full of ingredients, pots of herbs and stacks of recipe books, but everything now has a clear place.

Modern farmhouse kitchens are typically in neutral colors, or in variations of grey and black though they shouldn’t look too dark. Even smaller kitchens should be designed to be spacious and easy to move around, so if you have the space you might want a central kitchen island.

Lots of natural light is very important, as well as warm artificial light for those relaxing evening meals. There are so many ways to hide great storage solutions, and accessories to add that’ll finish the farmhouse look beautifully.

Where can I buy cheap farmhouse décor?

One of the great things about farmhouse décor is that something old can be given new life in your farmhouse kitchen. Often it’s those vintage or secondhand items that really complete the farmhouse look, so don’t be afraid to look on eBay for used items. You can put them in your kitchen complete with imperfections, which often adds to the rustic aesthetic, or upcycle old furniture so it looks brand new again.

Farmhouse kitchen ideas

Many farmhouse kitchens have a fruit bowl. This shouldn’t just be a forgotten accessory, but regularly stocked with fresh fruit. Not only does a fruit bowl make a room look more homely, but it adds a pop of color. Everyone will access the kitchen for the fruit bowl as they want snacks throughout the day, so instead of a closed and forgotten room your farmhouse kitchen becomes a lively hub.

Farmhouse kitchen wall décor

As the warm heart of a home, farmhouse kitchens often contain a feature clock. This would have been more useful in past generations, before we all had phones in our pockets, but today the clock is a decorative feature that brings a farmhouse kitchen to life.

You might also want to put a spice rack on the wall, instead of standing it on a work surface. Some people also add pan racks, or put kitchen utensils on display. Even a whisk and spatula can be part of your decoration!

Many people like art prints, or wooden signs, with family and home-related slogans. These could be individual words, like ‘Love’, ‘Home’, ‘Eat’ or ‘Gather’ or longer phrases like ‘This Kitchen is Seasoned with Love’.

Farmhouse kitchen accents

The things on display in your farmhouse kitchen should be on display for a reason. You’re not allowing clutter, but specifically highlighting the things that make your kitchen seem more homely. If something in your kitchen doesn’t make it look more like a welcoming family environment, then that’s something to be hidden away.

Accents to add to a farmhouse kitchen might include a home-grown herb garden, or a display of herbs in jars or pots. Recipe books, even if you don’t use them, can be added for extra decoration.

Smaller appliances, if left on display, should be appropriate colors and styles. The latest high-tech coffee maker might not look right (unless you have a Smeg), but a vintage-style food mixer will.

Country kitchen accessories

Often a country-style kitchen is a more sophisticated version of a farmhouse style. If you’re aiming for the country style, look into items with subtle shades that can create a more gentle accent, rather than bolder and more colorful accessories. Everything from dishcloth choice to cutlery caddies can add those small touches that give a kitchen a stylish country vibe.

Rustic kitchen accessories

Chunky bread boxes, chopping boards and copper pan sets are the ideal accessories to complete your rustic kitchen. Natural wood shelving and other metallic accents perfectly complement the overall rustic vibe that feels extremely cozy and homely.

Farmhouse kitchen décor ideas

When planning your farmhouse kitchen, your décor is likely to be quite natural– whites, pale shades and greys, with darker touches provided by metals and woods. Don’t be afraid to use color though – if you want to add personality then many farmhouse kitchens make great use of spring or autumnal hues and patterns that just add to that welcoming, cozy, warm feeling that you want as the gathering place in your home.

There’s a lot you can do with your farmhouse kitchen style, so find the design and accessories that best fit you.
