Supplies:

  • Wooden LUCK Shape – Dollar Store
  • Craft Paint – White, Light Green, Medium Green, Dark Green, Gold
  • Glitter Glue, Gold
  • Natural Jute Twine – Dollar Store
  • Ribbon – Scraps in Shades of Green
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – Dollar Store
  • Painter’s Tape, 1” Wide – Dollar Store
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Instructions:

STEP ONE

Gather all supplies. Basecoat the wooden shamrock plaque with white craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

STEP TWO

Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape vertically through the center of the shamrock plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying vertical stripes of painter’s tape out to the right and left edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.

Apply a light coat of white craft paint, over the painters tape, let dry. This will seal the edges, so the green paint won’t bleed underneath.

Apply a light coat of light green craft paint using a dry brush, remove painter’s tape, and set these strips of tape aside to use later. Let the paint dry completely. Don’t worry if your brush strokes show because it adds to the buffalo check effect.

STEP THREE

Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape horizontally through the center of the shamrock plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying horizontal stripes of painter’s tape out to the top and bottom edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.

Apply a light coat of white craft paint, over the painters tape, let dry.

Apply a light coat of medium green craft paint using a dry brush and let paint dry completely.

STEP FOUR

Apply the vertical strips of painters tape back onto the shamrock, starting in the middle. With a flat paintbrush, apply dark green craft paint in each square, let dry. Apply a second coat, if necessary.

Remove the painters tape to reveal the buffalo check pattern.

STEP FIVE

Measure and cut a 20” length of natural jute twine. Flip over the plaque, attach the ends of the twine to the right and left sides of the shamrock with a glue gun and glue sticks.

You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

STEP SIX

Measure scraps of ribbon, lace, and trims that are 6” long. Stack in an “X” pattern on top of a 12” length of natural jute twine. Tie the jute twine tightly in the center of the ribbons, securing with a knot. Fluff ribbons, and then trim any excess ribbons with scissors.

Paint wooden LUCK shape with gold craft paint, let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary. Apply a thick layer of gold glitter glue and spread out with a paintbrush, set aside to dry.

STEP SEVEN

Using a glue gun and glue sticks, attach the ribbon bundle to the center of the wooden shamrock plaque, and then add the gold LUCK shape to the center of the ribbon bundle.

All finished! Hang your cute St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock up or lean against the wall for some DIY St. Patrick’s Day decor charm.

Create this super cute Dollar Store Buffalo Check Shamrock Plaque in just about 30 minutes (not including drying time)! A fun craft to make with your friends on a cold winter’s night.
