What is the best homemade degreaser?

There are 3 ingredients you’ll need to make your own homemade degreaser:

Add half a cup vinegar, 2 tbsp baking soda and 1 tbsp dawn dish soap to a spray bottle. Let the baking soda fizz and then fill up the rest with water. Shake and spray!

Is Dawn a degreaser?

Yes, Dawn is a degreaser. Their dish soap has no problem tackling grease and many people swear by it.

They do also offer a Heavy Duty Degreaser which they call “full strength” which might be better suited to tougher jobs including floors, walls, tables and food areas.

How do you remove stubborn grease from a kitchen?

It depends on which area of the kitchen you’re wanting to clean and what you’re cleaning it for.

If you’re wanting to repaint the kitchen cabinets and need to get every speck of grease off, TSP is one of the best things I’ve ever used to cut through grease.

We had to move and really hadn’t ever cleaned our kitchen cabinets… and we had NO range hood over the stove. So, it was greasy. I tried so many products before I met with a cabinet expert from Home Depot who told me to try TSP.

I was BLOWN AWAY! You still had to scrub… but the results were nothing short of phenomenal! Some people don’t seem to like using TSP because of the chemicals but if you have a tough grease job- I would use TSP.

For every day kitchen use, Dawn or Citrosolv both work wonders and are non-toxic.

Does WD 40 clean grease?

This is directly from the WD-40 website;

“Multi-Use Product gets under dirt, grime and grease. Use it to remove gunk from tools, equipment and vehicles. WD-40® Multi-Use Product in liquid form (e.g., gallon) also dissolves adhesives, allowing easy removal of excess bonding material.”

So, yes, WD-40 is a degreaser 🙂

I would be careful using it in the kitchen- make sure you read through their specs recommendations.

Does vinegar dissolve grease?

Yes, vinegar is made of acetic acid which acts as a powerful degreasing agent. Check out the science behind vinegar here.

Does baking soda dissolve grease?

Arm and Hammer specifically mention how baking soda can dissolve grease:

“Baking soda neutralizes acids and breaks down the grease, allowing you to wipe it up without a lot of elbow grease. It’s also a mild abrasive, so it works well at removing dried, stuck-on foods.”

*Side note– I have cleaned gunky glass shower doors with ONLY baking soda and water and have never seen more impressive results. Mix baking soda into a thick paste, spread over gunky surface, let it sit and then wipe off.

What can I use instead of degreaser?

Vinegar, baking soda, dawn dish soap or citrasolv are all great non-chemical options.
